Plainmaxxing
A dedicated space for adherents of the Plainism philosophy to discuss adequate living, share their progress, rate their own plainness, and correspond with fellow practitioners of the method. Moderated by the Institute. Excessive posts will be noted.
The Plainism Institute did not, for seventy years, see the need for a community forum. Robert managed correspondence personally through the Letters section, which he considered sufficient. Deb wrote in. Frank wrote in. Others wrote in. The letters were addressed in the publication. The matter was handled.
The forum exists now because readers have expressed interest in corresponding with one another, and because Robert, after consideration, determined that this interest was not unreasonable. He has concerns about the word "community," which he feels implies a degree of organization that may not be warranted. The forum is not a community. It is a place where people of similar character may discuss matters of adequate living without introducing unnecessary enthusiasm into the proceedings.
Participation is encouraged. Excessive participation is noted. The Institute reserves the right to observe without comment.
WHAT IS PERMITTED
Discussion of adequate living. Questions about plainness. Progress updates from adherents. Letters that did not fit in the print edition. Observations about khaki. Casserole-adjacent topics, with discretion.
WHAT IS NOT PERMITTED
Excessive enthusiasm. Opinions on Vol. XLIV No. 2 that are not directly relevant to the discussion at hand. Recommendations of colors other than khaki without adequate justification. Questions Robert has already answered in print.
ON MODERATION
The forum is moderated by the Institute. Robert reads all posts. He does not respond to all posts. A post that receives no response from Robert has not been ignored. It has been read and found adequate or otherwise.
ON PLAINMAXXING
Plainmaxxing refers to the practice of optimizing one's life toward adequacy. This is the goal. Not excellence. Not minimalism. Adequacy. Members are encouraged to track their progress and report it plainly.
